Well, the theobromine content contained in chocolate is actually the culprit: if your dog ingests enough of it, this can result in an increased heart rate, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, however, theobromine can cause seizures and death in dogs. The caffeine content in chocolate, too, can be toxic for dogs. Overall, the severity of side effects from chocolate can vary based on the size of your dog—as well as what type of chocolate has been consumed, as the darker and less sweet a chocolate is, the more harmful it is to your furry friend.
